This is an example of an elaborately decorated European Wheelock short rifle that is most likely German or Austrian in origin. The stock side plate is nicely engraved with a scene of three men in the medieval setting with decorative scroll border, the buttplate has a medieval dressed man surrounded by floral scroll designs. The end of the cheek piece has a floral scroll engraved design and the ram rod pipes also have a floral scroll design. The trigger guard has a three finger grip with a medieval soldier finial and bust, and scroll engraving on the bow. The walnut patch box lid and top of the stock has brass overlays with floral scroll engraved designs. The full length stock has floral vine raised relief carving with a decorative floral scroll engraved forend cap. Double set triggers, with wooden ramrod with brass tip.
BBL: 29 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 58
Finish: bright
Grips:
Serial Number: nsn
Condition: Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with a small amount of minor pitting on the lock. The wheel key is absent, otherwise the action functions properly. The stock is very good with exception of an old fill repair on the upper left of the buttstock and overall some minor dents, dings and scratches. The stock is missing a couple of pins, and remains loose, but secure to the barrel. The carving remains sharp. The engraving is crisp and clear.
