18th Century "Long Fowler' flintlock musket. The musket has a pin-fastened, part round/part octagon barrel with brass blade front sight. The octagon portions of the barrel are decorated with deeply cut, open, scroll and floral decorations and gilt inlays. The lock plate has the same general shape as the early British Long Land muskets but the edges are beveled. The double bridle lock has an integral, fenced iron pan and gooseneck hammer. The face of the lock and hammer are decorated with simple engraving. The walnut stock has a rounded forearm tip and beavertail relief carving with shell-shaped terminal at the tang. The brass ramrod pipes, trigger guard and buttplate are similar to those found on British Brown Bess muskets. The flat, brass, side plate has beveled edges. The musket has an iron ramrod with button head. The barrel has no visible proof or makers marks. 'Long Fowler' flintlock muskets of this general configuration were popular in New England prior to the American Revolution.
