This is a Colt Model 1862 Police revolver that was manufactured in 1862 and subsequently New York engraved. The revolver has a silver-plated finish and one-piece ivory grip. The revolver, back strap, trigger guard, hammer, frame, cylinder, loading lever sides and barrel are decorated with deluxe Germanic style scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The engraving is identical in style to that executed by engraver Gustave Young's shop on Colt revolvers. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK US AMERICA" enclosed with an engraved, double line border. The "COLTS/PATENT" marking on the left side of the frame is enclosed in a double line panel. "36 CAL" on the left shoulder of the trigger guard is enclosed in a lined panel with a scroll-work flourish below the caliber marking. The rebated portion of the five-shot cylinder and the raised area above the chambers is engraved with scrollwork on a punch-dot background and the forward edge of the cylinder is engraved with a scallop and dot border. "PATENT SEPT 10th 1853 is roll-stamped in one cylinder flute. The sides of the hammer are engraved with wolf's head motif. The full serial number "11690" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The barrel lug, frame and back strap serial number is surrounded by engraved borders or scrollwork. The partial serial number "1690" is stamped on the cylinder arbor pin and on the rear face of the cylinder. The wedge is numbered "3878".
BBL: 6 1/2 inch
Stock:
Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: silver-plated
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 11690
Condition: Very good as period engraved. The revolver retains 70% of the silver-plated finish. The heaviest wear is concentrated on the contact points of the brass trigger guard and back strap. The percussion nipples have moderate flash-pitting; the cylinder safety pins are battered. The flawlessly executed scroll engraving is uniformly crisp and deep. The serial numbers and factory markings on the barrel, fame cylinder and trigger guard are sharp. The ivory grip has aged to a mellow cream-colored patina and has hair-line age cracks on the sides and butt and a longer hairline crack on the right side that extends the length of the grip. This is an attractive example of a Colt Model 1862 Police revolver with what appears to be of the style of Colt factory engraving executed by Gustave Young or his shop.
