Engraved Gold Inlaid Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Sporting Rifle with Factory Letter

Winchester Model 1886 rifle manufactured in 1898 and subsequently custom embellished in 1985 by Charley Baker. The breech and muzzle ends are engraved with a floral scroll design with a punch dot background and a gold inlaid band. The top of the bolt has a scallop border, directly behind the loading gate is the same floral scroll engraving with gold inlaid border and there is a geometric design around the screw, as well as a gold inlaid band surrounding it. The sides of the hammer and lever have a floral leaf and punch dot design with gold inlaid wire bordering. The buttplate tang is similarly decorated with a gold inlaid band around the screw. The top barrel flat is marked with the two line address ahead of the rear sight and "45-70" in a scallop bordered panel at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-", and the lower tang is marked with the two line patent date marking directly behind the trigger and the serial number on the end. Dovetailed blade front and adjustable buck horn rear sights, half magazine, all blue finish and mounted with a checkered walnut forearm with engraved and gold inlaid steel end cap, and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber Winchester grip and crescent buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the takedown rifle configuration, octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, 1/2 magazine and that it was received in and shipped out of the warehouse on February 28, 1898. The letter states that at the time of shipment it was chambered in 40/82 caliber and had Lyman sights. The rifle also comes with a hand written letter from "R.S.M." dated 7-28-01 stating in part that a Charley Baker engraved and gold inlaid this rifle.

Very good as custom engraved and assembled with half of the thin blue finish remaining mixed with a smooth brown patina. There is some minor spotting on the barrel. The wood is very good with some minor dents, dings and scratches, and crisp checkering. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. The action is fine.
