Manufactured circa 1872 to 1874. This revolver has subsequently been custom embellished and gold plated. The first variation of the Number Three was dubbed the American, and bears many distinctions, including being the first cartridge revolver to be adopted by the United States military and has traditionally been associated with the American West. This is a First Model transition American has the interlocking hammer, however is absent of the bump in the bottom of the frame just above the trigger. The revolver has nearly full coverage of floral scroll and punch dot engraving. In addition there is an eagle on the left side of the frame and two big horn sheep on the right side. The top of the barrel rib is marked "+SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A PAT. JULY10. 60. JAN 17. FEB 17. JULY 11. 65 & AUG. 24. 69+". The serial number is marked on the butt with the matching assembly number "C9" on the rear cylinder face and barrel latch. Gold finish and fitted with smooth pearl grips.

Condition:
Good as refinished with 80% gold finish remaining. There is a bright appearance on the exposed areas. There is a small amount of scattered minor pitting under the finish. The grips are very good with a small chip and three small minor cracks on the front of the right panel. The engraving and markings are clear. The action is fine.
