Engraved ''English Bulldog'' Single and Double Action Cartridge Revolver, NVSN, .45 CF cal., 2.75'' round barrel, marked ''English'' and ''Bulldog'' on the top strap, with delicately engraved frame, backstrap, triggerguard bow and cylinder between the flutes. Loading gate hinges downward. Originally overall chrome plated. Checkered and varnished walnut two-piece grips. The Bulldog type of revolver was first made in England in the late 1860s, and was widely copied in both Europe and America through the early 20th Century. Legendary Gen. George Armstrong Custer was said to have carried a pair at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and a British Bulldog revolver was used to assassinate U.S. President James A. Garfield on July 2, 1881. Condition is fine to excellent retaining approx. 98% original plating with light erosion at frame sides that should clean well. Grips are good with wear to checkering and little original varnish. Action is smooth; bore will clean and shows good rifling. Est.: $450-$650. (Antique)
