This is an example of a Colt Model 1905 Military pistol as produced in late 1907. This model was the direct predecessor to the Model 1911 with only a total production of 6,100 made from 1905 to 1911. The fine example has a very nice, period engraved "zig-zag" type pattern around the border, mixed with flower/floral pattern and geometric designs on the side of the slide and frame, covering approximately 20% of the pistol surfaces. The pistol has the standard two-line, two-block address and patent date markings on the left side of the slide, with the two-line, one block caliber and model markings on the right side. The pistol serial number is located on the left side of the frame above the trigger guard bow. It has the early style rounded hammer found on this model until serial number 3600. It has the original Colt checkered walnut grips with the diamond pattern around the grip screws. This model was not a commercial success for Colt. Development of the 45 ACP cartridge and the Model 1911 to fire the cartridge cut short the production of the Model 1905.
