Engraved Colt Model 1851 Navy percussion revolver, .36 cal., 7-1/2” octagon barrel, ivory grips, #204685E, formerly in the Dr. Sterling Fenn collection and displayed at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center with engraved Colt Model 1851 Navy #204672E (13 numbers apart) displayed by the Museum as having descended thru the family of the man who allegedly bought the gun at auction in Deadwood in 1876 to help pay for James B.“Wild Bill” Hickok’s funeral expenses. According to Dr. Fenn’s binder of extensive records accompanying this lot, he obtained this gun in 1982 from an antique dealer in Bloomington, Minnesota who bought the gunfrom an “old gentleman” along with a cut-down rifle. Dr. Fenn notes: “both were dirty and in somewhat poor shape. They both had light to moderate pitting and had not been cleaned in many years. They had been in a trunk; therevolver was wrapped in a rag and was still loaded! The old gentleman said he’d had them for years and originally got them from an old man who had had them since the early days in South Dakota”. Dr. Fenn’s files also
