English officer’s sword with scabbard. Blade etched “Henry Murry Calvert 11th NY Vol. Cavalry Scott’s (900) 1862-1865” The sword is etched on the reverse with English cipher, crown, GR, and maker’s name Craig and Kilgour, 89 George St. Edinburgh. The sword is typical English officer’s pattern of the 1860’s with three-branch iron guard, iron mounts, and copper wire wrapped over shark skin grip. The blade measures 36” in length. The sword is 41” overall. It is contained within a 19th to early 20th century display case which is lined in blue velveteen and shows a hand-painted brass plaque which states “This English Sabre was worn by Henry M. Calvery in the 11th N.Y. Volunteer cavalry (Scott’s 900) during the war for the union. 1861-1865.” The silk sword knot was a lady’s token. The blade is in fine condition, the etching is genuine to the 19th century. The scabbard is good with a few dings, mars, some minimal pinprick pitting. The blade is fine to near excellent with most of its polish. The case is very good plus to near fine and is beautifully made to preserve this artifact. Would be interesting to further research.
