English naval-service type blunderbuss, late 18th to early 19th century. 38” overall, 22” heavy iron barrel with thick walls flaring to nearly 2-3/8” across the muzzle with nearly over 1-3/4” bore. The breech of barrel showsBritish proofs, the lock shows engraved marks “R. E. A.” in block letters and the British markings on the lock appear to have been purposefully removed long ago. The metal surfaces show a light grey to deep brownpatina finish with scattered light to slightly heavy pitting. The stock is generally good with some small worm holes, a well done repair to the forend, some small losses around the lock area, generally good. The lock is a well-done reconversion with some simulated aging. The conversion utilized and original flintlock hammer and frizzen, and was well done. The lock markings are intriguing and these ship’s blunderbuss’ went into private service and were occasionally captured. This is one of the bigger examples we have seen and could almost quality as a rail gun or small canon. Est: $2,000 - $4,000
