English flintlock dueling/target pistol by Ryan & Watson of London. One of originally a pair in its original case, missing its mate and accessories. The top of the case inscribed in period script letters “The citizens of New York to Lieut. Fred A. Worth”. Lt. Frederick A. Worth was a naval hero in the war of 1812 who, as first officer under Samuel C. Reed of the American Privateer, General Armstrong, was wounded in a heroic action September 14th at the Portuguese port of Fayal in the Azores when their brig was attacked by a squadron of British warships commanded by Admiral Sir Thomas Cochrane that were enroute to Jamaica to join the British fleet sailing against the city of New Orleans. The General Armstrong fought fiercely. Outnumbered approx 6 to 1, the little Privateer General Armstrong repelled 6 British warships and 2,000 men. The Americans killed or wounded more than 300 British officers and sailors. Badly damaged, the General Armstrong was ultimately scuttled at the port of Fayal to avoid capture. The Americans prepared for ground attack, but the British thought best not to attack after their ferociousness. This battle delayed the British Navy, buying more than a month’s time and
