English flintlock dueling pistol converted to percussion, U.S. agent marked “W. S. Spratle, Norfolk, VA”. Approx. 17” overall with 11-1/4” barrel of approx. .62 caliber rifled. Half stocked, signed “T. Mortimer, London” with London proofs. The pistol remains in original fair to good condition showing a dark brown patina, some scattered erosion and pinprick pitting, the hammer safety was purposely removed, the half stock is fair to good with some darkening, slight scorching around left side. Some minor scratches, normal use. The action is good. An old wood ramrod is included. A very large bore and well-balanced pistol by a premium English gunmaker. Probably sold in America in the early 19th century. American converted in the 1830’s and the type that could have been taken to war in the Confederacy as every gun was used in the South.
