This is a unique English Sheffield broad camp axe head with hallmark from the 1800's. The piece shows the makers mark and was manufactured by Spear and Jackson of Sheffield, England. The piece is marked also with No. 2 to denotre its model and size. The piece is from a Great Falls, Montana American Indian collection and was thought to have been traded to the Plains Indians, but this thought is not confirmed. The axe head measures 3 1/2" tall, 5 1/8" wide, and 1" thick. Spear and Jackson was founded in 1760 by Alexander Spear and John Love being called Spear & Love. In 1814, John Spear, the nephew of Alexander Spear the founder, took on an apprectice called Sam Jackson. In 1830, the partnership Spear and Jackson was formed. This dated to the 19th Century.
