Eastern Woodlands Presentation Pipe Tomahawk 1780-
This is an excellent early Eastern Woodlands Native American Indian presentation pipe tomahawk attributed to the Mohawk Indians in upper New York state and dating to circa 1780-1800’s. The piece shows a cast brass head with faceted pipe bowl, steel dove-tailed insert blade and floral engraving. The head has a nice oxidation and patina from age and use. The haft is adorned with a silver poured band and a few large brass trade tacks. There is a unique copper smoking top at the bottom end, and a very rare gold “friendship chain” attached to the haft. Friendship link chains were seen on early Eastern Woodlands Indian presentation pipe tomahawk but would often break off and be lost, with the example being present still and preserved. Surviving examples with the gold or silver china intact are very rare. The piece comes with a custom display stand. At the base of the stand there is a brass plaque that reads, “Circa 1800 Indian Tomahawk Pipe Collected by Lucien Williams from the Mohawk tribe New York”. Truly a fine piece with great art appeal and well-preserved condition. Measures overall 20 ½ inches in length with a 6 ¾ inch long head that has a 2 ¼ inch blade.
