This is an exceptional authentic Eastern Great Lakes Native American Indian quilled knife sheath from the late 18th to early 19th century (circa 1780-1820). The sheath shows an Indian tanned hide construction with exceptionally crafted porcupine quillwork with a white and red mineral dye color. The piece also shows early rolled tin jingle cones with remnants of red mineral dyed Buffalo hair. The top edge shows glass trade seed beaded fancy design in semi-transparent greasy yellow and padre blue, an addition to the sheath added later, most likely added circa 1840-1850. The piece has been wonderfully preserved and shows a museum quality condition with nearly no quill or bead loss. One of the finest, if not the finest, knife sheath we have offered for sale and the finest currently available for public purchase. This piece was looked over and found to be correct when it was sold by Bonhams Auction House at Lot 670 at the premier 6/7/2016 sale. The piece measures 2" x 10.25". Truly an excellent piece: Provenance: Sold and found to be correct and authentic by Bonhams Auction House and from a large private Native American Indian Artifact collection in France.
