Early to mid 17th century English rapier with flat pie-plate guard, nicely pierced and typically English-style engraved in as-found out of the attic condition. The rapier measures 53-1/4” with 44-1/2” blade. Themetal surfaces show light to slightly heavy scattered erosion and pitting, with some heavy pitting on the pommel. Blade and guard show some cleaning long ago. The guard shows English style intertwining scrolls that arehand-engraved with early drill-hole type pierce work. The blade, guard, and pommel appear to be matching, the wire over wood grip is unraveling slightly. The pommel nut shows no evidence of being disturbed. Theblade is tempered with good balance and the type we would expect an English mounted horseman to have used in the Cromwellian era or shortly after. Est: $2,500 - $5,000
