Early Southern Cheyenne Beaded Hide Pipe Bag
The lot features a beautiful 19th Century Southern Cheyenne Indian beaded hide pipe bag. The bag is comprised of Indian brain-tanned Great American Bison Buffalo hide. The bag shows wonderful geometric beadwork done in glass trade seed beads with a typical Cheyenne tab or bar design seen on other bags of the 19th Century. The beadwork shows colors of greasy yellow, white, medium blue, red white hearts, greasy green and light sky padre blue. The block beadwork designs are on both sides and run up the border of both sides as well. The entire bag has a red ocher mineral pigment coloring and the base has a frilly hide fringe. Parts of the hide are dry from age but still supple. Little to no bead loss is shown. Truly a work of art. From a Cincinnati, Ohio collection. Measures 28 inches in length by 5 inches wide.
