This early production carbine has the hook type friction latch breechblock and brass mountings which distinguishes it from the Model 1864. The lock plate is marked "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS Co/STONINGTON/CONN" and the 1862 dated breechblock with the hook type latch and exposed firing pin extension is marked with the 1861/1862 patent dates. The breechblock is also marked with the number "4" with upper tang marked with the letter "P" under the block and a faint number "4" rear of the aforementioned mark. Smooth one piece straight grip stock with "WP" inspector initials stamped on the left flat.

Condition: Very good plus. The barrel retains 25% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina with even pin point pitting. The remaining iron surfaces has a mottled brown-gray patina with some pin point pitting. The brass has a mixed aged patina. The lock plate has hints of case color with the balance a silver grey. The stock is also very good with a large surface chip missing from the forearm (right side), some chipping, and a few minor to moderate shallow pressure dents and gouges, along with some minor dings and scratches. The cartouche is crisp. Mechanically excellent.
