Deluxe Winchester Model 1895 Flat Side Sporting Rifle with Winchester factory letter. The letter states that this rifle was shipped on June 30, 1896. It describes Model 1895 Serial No. 817 as "rifle, caliber 30, checkered stock, pistol grip, shotgun butt, rubber buttplate". The rifle has a blued, tapered barrel, blued 'flat side' receiver and early, curved, one-piece loading lever. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, "fancy grain", walnut. There are "Style H" checkered panels on the forearm and pistol grip. The forearm tip has a black, horn insert and the stock has a black, hard rubber, pistol grip cap embossed: "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co.". The stock has a black, hard rubber, checkered, shotgun style buttplate with the circular Winchester logo in the middle. The barrel has a Winchester Express front sight with ivory bead and a dove-tail mounted Lyman Express rear sight with two folding leaves. A Lyman "WR-WT" rear sight is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The caliber "30 U.S." is stamped on the top of the barrel immediately in front of the receiver. "WINCHESTER-MODEL 1895-" is bold stamped in two lines on the upper tang. The two-line patent markings are located behind the trigger and the serial number "817" is stamped on the lower tang between the screws. First model or "Flat Side' Model 1895 rifles were made in limited numbers (approximately 5000 rifles) and author George Madis estimated in "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" that only 1 in every 1400 Model 1895 rifles was fitted with a pistol grip stock; deluxe, fancy walnut pistol grip stocks with checkering are rarer still.
BBL: 28 inch
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 30-40 Krag
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 817
Condition: Partially refurbished. The barrel has been re-blued and shows scattered light pitting. The receiver retains 30% of the original blue finish; the balance is a plum-brown patina with some high point wear. The rear sight may be a period replacement and the receiver sight is probably a later addition. The recheckered stock and forearm are both in good condition. This is a solid example of a Winchester First Model 1895 Rifle with rare special order features.
