This is an example of a scarce early production commercial Walther Model HP pistol that was considered to be in the third developmental stage of production. The pistol has the highly polished commercial blue finish and black bakelite grips with checkered panels and rounded lanyard ring on the left heel. This pistol was probably produced in early 1940 and these early commercial P.38s were manufactured prior to the start of WWII and are true commercial pistols. The left side of the slide is marked with the Walther Banner followed by the factory legend and caliber in two lines and the designation "Mod. HP". The serial number is located on the front of the barrel flat and on the right side of the frame above the trigger guard. The inside of the slide is marked with a Nazi "eagle/359" proofmark and the left side of the locking block is marked with a five point star. The magazine is marked "P.38" on the lower left side. The "eagle/N" commercial proofmark is stamped on the right side of the frame ahead of the serial number, right front of the slide and on the right side of the barrel rail as well as the number "35". The front sight face has been painted yellow. Complete with a brown leather flap holster marked "lyo" Nazi "eagle / WaA11" proof and "P.38" on the back.
