This is a WWI, 1917 Erfurt Luger that was a early post-WWI police reworked for the Weimar government. This specific luger is only marked with the original year of manufacture on top of the chamber area and was not stamped with the typical 1920 Reischwehr property date. The right side of the barrel has the large "eagle/PTV" for Technical Police Unit, along with a small Eagle/6 proofmark on top of the barrel. Both of these proofmarks are found on Police Lugers reworked by the Simson factory in the mid to late 1920s. The top of the chamber is dated "1917" and the front toggle has the "Crown/Erfurt" mark of the Erfurt factory. The right side of the barrel extension has the three "crown over gothic letter" proofs along with a Imperial eagle proof. During the rework process the police sear bar was added on top of the side plate. In addition to those marks some of the original parts still retain their original "Crown over RC proof" indicating that some of the parts did not meet the military tolerances but were still acceptable for use in production and reworks. The safety area and extractor are correctly marked "GESICHERT" and "GELADEN". The Lugers all have a rust blued finish on the metal parts with straws colors on the small parts with checkered walnut grips. It is complete with a unmarked nickel plated magazine with an wooden base that is stamped "1/8637/1".
BBL: 4 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 9 mm Luger
Finish: blue/straw colors
Grips: walnut checkered
Serial Number: 6417j
Condition: Very fine with 80% plus of the arsenal refurbished blued finish with wear and thinning on the edges and high spots overall, with blue loss on the front edges of the frame rails, the side plate hump the complete front sight base and very front under section of the barrel. The various small parts retain traces of their straw colors overall. The grips are in very good condition overall with nice intact and distinct checkering on both sides with minor wear across the tops of the checkering with a few minor handling marks on both sides with more wear on the front edges. It has matching numbers on the various parts except the grips and magazine as noted above. Mechanically excellent. A very nice example of an early Weimar Police rework Luger.
