Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with Cody Firearms Museum Serial Number Research Request. The request states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on November 2, 1892, and describes it as a "Rifle, Caliber 45-90, Octagon Barrel" with "Plain Trigger". The rifle has a full length magazine and the barrel is fitted with a nickel-silver, blade front sight and sporting style rear sight. The barrel, magazine, bolt, loading gate and trigger have a blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever and recarved crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain walnut with a varnish finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "- MANUFACTURED BY THE - / - WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.NEW HAVEN.CONN.U.S.A. - " in two unequal lines. The caliber, "45-90 W.C.F.", is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel behind the rear sight. "- MODEL 1886 -" is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates and the serial number "71301" are stamped on the lower receiver tang.

Stock: walnut
Gauge: 45-90 WCF
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 71301
Condition: Excellent. The rifle retains nearly 95% of the original blue and casehardened finish. The barrel has some minor finish loss on the edges near the muzzle and the blue finish on the magazine shows very light handling wear. The blue finish on the bolt, loading gate and trigger is 99%. The case colors on the forearm cap are muted but visible. The sides of the receiver, upper and lower tang, hammer and sides of the loading lever have vivid case colors. The case colors on the top and bottom surfaces of the receiver and loading lever have 50%, with the balance faded to a silver-gray patina. The buttplate has a silver patina with some very minor age spotting. The barrel and lower tang markings are crisp. The bore is bright. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition; nearly all of the original varnish finish is present and handling and storage wear is minimal. This is an outstanding example of a Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with very desirable casehardened receiver.
