Early Americana Ephemera Collection 1875-1900s
Featured in this lot is an 1875 To Early 1900s Americana Ephemera Collection, nine (9) pieces. Included are seven (7) pieces from 1875 to the early 1900s from Bangor, Maine. Among these is a 1877 flyer for a musical show in the 19th century traveling minstrel style. The show is billed as "Introducing New Sentimental Songs, Operatic Selections, Plantation Melodies, Ethiopic Sketches, and Instrumental Music in great variety." Of special importance in the flier, is the last song of Part 1st, Camptown Races, one of the "gems" of the minstrel era and written by noted songwriter, Stephen Foster. Two more fliers advertise "walking races", America's favourite spectator sport of the 1870s and 1880s. Pedestrianism (long distance race walking) was a 19th-century form of competitive walking, often professional and just like horse racing, was funded by wagering and was the beginning of modern day race walkers.
The ephemera is in overall good condition especially considering the almost 150 years age of some items. Age tanning, foxing and slight tears exhibited, no other obvious marring noted. Largest piece measures 8.5"W x 14.5"L
