Early American writing chest constructed of striped and curly maple with original to the period inlaid brass plaque inscribed in fine script letters “Henry Worthington, U.S. Navy”. The traveling chest measures 8” inheight by 20-3/4” in width and is mounted with brass corners and straps. The wood is in very good original condition with impressive grain, some slight cracks, small losses, normal aging and generally goodoverall needing some small repairs and restorations but basically complete other than the fold out in the upper lid. The brass shows an uncleaned original patina. Henry Worthington served from aboard the USSConstitution, one of America’s most famous ships that battled with distinction during the war with the Barbary pirates and later in actions during the war of 1812 and in 30 engagements she was never defeated in battle. Worthington reported to the constitution at Gibraltar February 1805, was transferred to the Franklin in August of 1805 and he was commissioned as a sailing master in 1813 and discharged 1815 and his service should be
