Early American plains rifle utilizing Harper’s Ferry lock and parts showing brass tacks and wraps, with Harper’s Ferry lock dated 1818. The rifle has been bored out to .62 caliber smooth bore. Measures 47-1/4”overall with 32-3/4” barrel. The barrel shows U.S. and Harper’s Ferry proofs. The lock plate shows a clear eagle and U.S. at center, good Harper’s Ferry and 1818 date. The hammer is gunsmith made and shows lightengraving the stock is a simply hand made and shows a pewter forend cap, military brass side plate, triggerguard, trigger, and buttplate. The Harper’s Ferry type rib shows a old lead solder. The stock is inlaid withperiod tacks, four on the left, two on each side of the forend. The barrel is resecured to the stock with wrapped leather that has been shrunk and tarred and appears to have been damaged underneath this area where there was a barrel key. The gun is in fair condition showing use and carry on the frontier. A period hand-carved ramrod is retained. These Harper’s Ferry rifles went west and these old parts were always reused
