HAMMER SXS PERCUSSION SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 Ga. NSN. Joseph Montigny was a mid 19th century Belgian gunsmith famous for his breechloading designs that includes the Mitrailleuse volley gun. The brown finished 30" bbls. have front bead & gold inlaid "Montigny el Fusnot a Bruxelles" on rib. Mod. & Full chokes. Back action hammer locks have well executed engraved hunting scenes including: setter & patridge on right plate, setter on top tang, flushing quail on breech of bbl., woodcock & fox on left plate, prancing doe on trigger guard bow, flushing mallard on triggerguard tang & 2 quail on buttplate peak. Scenes are highlighted by acanthus scroll engraving that extends to thimble, hammers & wedge escutcheons. Sideplates have shaped rear contours to match stock ears. Half length wedge fastened straight grip walnut stock w/ spear tip, clam shell finial trigger guard, wrap around checkering & carbine style sling loops on toeline & rear pipe. Brass tipped hardwood ramrod w/ jag tip. CONDITION: bbls. have faded brown finish to black patina showing peppery oxidation & marks. Gloss finished wood has good appearance showing smoothed checkering, numerous impressions & scratches along w/ a few chips & spots of peeling finish. Locks appear to function when cycled by hand. Bores have dark appearance w/ light pitting & notably large dent in left bore 4" from the muzzle. (01-22699/MD). ANTIQUE. $300-700.
