ENGRAVED RIMFIRE SAA REVOLVER. Cal. 44 RF. S# 1677. Bbl. 7 1/2" with semi-circular sight. 6-shot fluted cyl. Black powder frame with circular centerfire firing pin hole as well as extended rimfire relief cut. Hammer has flat rimfire style pin. Bullseye ejector rod head. Bbl., frame, trigger guard, grip strap, and cyl. have matching S# "1677". S# on bbl. shows evidence of over stamping. S# on frame has unusually uneven numbers. Loading gate has apparent assembly # "19". Ejector rod housing is marked with # "346". Grip straps have matching numbers "1677". Bottom of bbl. near the breech is marked "44". Left side of front trigger guard web is marked "44 CAL". Unsigned New York style added engraving is slightly more extensive but very similar to style B factory engraving of the 1870s-1880s period. Engraving consists of vine type foliate scroll with punch dot backgrounds on the frame, bbl., cyl., backstrap, and trigger guard with sunburst pattern on the loading gate. Sides of grip straps and forward portions of the lower frame have crosshatched highlights. Ejector housing has geometric pattern engraving with wheat head finials. Replacement 1-piece natural white grip. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Colt factory letter stating "Serial Number: 1677/ Caliber: .44 Rim Fire/ Barrel Length: Not Listed/ Finish: Blue/ Type of Stocks: Not Listed/ Shipped to: Wexell & DeGress/ Address: Mexico City, Mexico/ Date of Shipment: November 11, 1880/ Number of Same Type/ Guns in Shipment: 12". Gun is housed in a oak and leather case with red velour fitted interior and brass fittings. Inside of lid has black and gold Colt Firearms label. Case contains 3 keys. CONDITION: fine, metal retains over 95% post-engraving added nickel finish having a lightly worn and cloudy appearance. Engraving remains sharp. Action is sound. Lightly pitted bore retains strong rifling. Grips show age related checking. Case is in very good overall condition. (01-26625/DS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-7,000.
