Contains some of the earliest and the most striking illustrations of the Grand Canyon: 12 double-sheet maps (most of which are printed in color) and ten double-sheet panoramas (most tinted). One of the panoramas, entitled The Transept is by Thomas Moran, the renowned Western landscape painter and etcher. The rest of the panoramas were done by the great archeologist-artist William Henry Holmes, whose illustrations for this volume are considered “masterpieces of realism and draftsmanship as well as feats of imaginative observation” (Goetzmann, Exploration and Empire, 512-13) TEXT VOLUME: Monographs of the United States Geological Survey – Volume II, Tall quarto, 264 pages, 1885. One of the definitive set of books on the Grand Canyon. Commissioned as a study of the region’s geology and issued by the fledgling US Geological Survey. A seminal work on the Canyon that has never been surpassed for its eloquence and authority. CONDITION: Atlas volume fine and fresh with minor expert cloth rebacked with original cover laid down. Corner cover edges and page edges frayed. Double-folio plates exceptionally clean and bright with none of the rubbing often found. Light wear to extremities of text volume, plates and text fine. Restored in the correct manner with leather cover
