Dutch Vaseline Fluorescence Trade Bead Necklaces
Offered in this lot are two necklaces of Dutch Vaseline fluorescence trade beads. Dating back to as early as 1830, Vaseline beads were originally attractive, greenish-yellow glass beads whose pretty color is attributed to the presence of uranium salts. These beads tend to fluoresce under ultraviolet light and turn a violent green. The first necklace is strung on natural twine. The beads are a large round/oval and swirled yellow. The beads measure an average 3/4" X 1/2". There are 30 beads on this necklace that measures 22 1/2". The next necklace is made of green and yellow swirl colored beads and disks. This necklace is 19 1/2" long. The disks and beads are strung on a modern wire and clasp, however these beads have a very bright fluorescence, dating them from 1830-1915. There are 14 "beads" and 92 "disks". The beads are ¼” x 3/8” and the disks are 3/16" X 3/8". Today, Vaseline beads still retain their special significance as highly prized African trade beads. Both of these necklaces are in very good condition.
