Duhamel Trading Post Sioux Ledger Art Tags C. 1910
Featured in this lot are three original Sioux Ledger Art tags from the Duhamel Trading Post in Rapid City, South Dakota circa 1910-1920s. The tags were done by the Sioux from the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Indian Reservations. The Duhamel Trading Post was established in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1907 by Pete Duhamel, born in 1839 in Canada and moved to Rapid City, Dakota Territory in 1879. The lot shows three original tags, all of which made by and marked Dennison Manufacture Company, established in 1844. The tags likely date to circa 1910-1920’s. Each tag has Indian tanned hide ties, two of which have wound glass trade beads and painted shell or nut beads. The tags have original Ledger Art drawings, one showing a Sioux Warrior sitting on his horse with his head hanging low, one with a Sioux man smoking a peace pipe and the final one showing a Sioux man standing a top a hill, preparing his tobacco and pipe. These are rare and original pieces. The tags show good condition overall with only one having its tanned hide tie broken off. The tags measure 4 1/2" L x 2 1/8" W.
