Phil Tippett and his studio played a pivotal role in designing the legendary dragon, Draco, for the 1996 fantasy film Dragonheart. Tippett served as the principal creature designer, leading the creation of the physical maquettes and stop-motion animatics that served as the foundational visual reference for the ground-breaking CGI animation.
Phil Tippett brought his extensive creature-design expertise—honed on projects like Jurassic Park and Dragonslayer—to Dragonheart. Working with a dedicated crew of sculptors and artists, Tippett's studio Tippett Studio built the initial design maquettes. These physical sculptures established Draco's iconic, wise appearance and were used to fine-tune the creature's facial structure and scales before any animation took place.
Before the final CGI work began, Tippett's team created animatics for Dragonheart. By plotting out these early, simplified versions of the scenes, Tippett's team helped map out the pacing, camera angles, and dragon-human interactions. These references were handed off to Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), who utilized them to build and animate the final photorealistic, full-CG dragon that shared scenes with Dennis Quaid.
This lot is part of the Phil Tippett Collection and will come with a co-signed COA by Phil Tippett.
