Documented Wounded Knee Indian gun carried by Rough Feather with Rock Island Arsenal tag dated March 1897 identifying the Indian from whom it was taken, described as an English trade musket, rack location, “FD Seiberling”, assistant forman’s name on this tag. This is one of eight captured Indian arms delivered to professor J. W. Ellis from the arsenal with accompanying newspaper articles describing Ellis and his connection toGeneral Edgerly’s archive in which this gun was originally included. The gun was subsequently gifted from Ellis to Edgerly. The gun is in relic condition showing heavy rust and may have been buried in a blanket at one time, traces of wrapped hide, general rough treatment throughout. The gun is approx. 12ga smoothbore with a 37” barrel, 54” overall. The Indian tradition was to hide their firearms until they needed them andwere normally buried in a wrapped blanket. The musket is uncleaned and untouched with original arsenal tag. Note: Raw Feather survived the battle of Wounded Knee and was interviewed for the first book about this
