Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with letter from the Cody Firearms Museum. The letter states that this rifle, serial number 125351. was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on September 1, 1903. The Winchester records describe it as: "Rifle, Caliber:50/100, Barrel Type: 1/2 Octagon, Trigger: Set, Sights: Lyman rear and combination front, 1/2 Flat top sporting rear, 1/2 Magazine, Shotgun butt, Rubber". The rifle has a blued half-round/half-octagon barrel, half-magazine, forearm cap and receiver. The loading lever and hammer have a case-hardened finish. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut with a varnish finish. The stock has a black, hard rubber, checkered, shotgun style buttplate with embossed, round, Winchester logo in the center. The barrel has a special order Lyman folding combination front sight and Sporting rear sight with flat top profile and small adjusting screw. The receiver has factory double set-triggers. The top of the barrel flat is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE- / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. US.A-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight and "50-100-450" between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-". The lower tang is marked with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates in two lines behind the trigger and the serial number "125351" between the tang screws.
