A) Matched pair of elaborate percussion pocket pistols made by John H. Krider of Philadelphia. The pistols were made for Theodore Cuyler (1819-1876), a prominent Philadelphia barrister, and are engraved with the Cuyler family crest on a gold oval plate inlaid on the left stock flat. The Cuyler family was one of the most prominent early American families in both New York and Pennsylvania. Theodore Cuyler was the most respected barrister in Philadelphia in the second quarter of the 19th century had offices at 704 Walnut Street, only a few blocks from John Krider's gun shop on Second and Walnut. These pistols were formerly part of the Norm Flayderman collection. The pistols are pictured in "THE BOWIE KNIFE, UNSHEATHING AN AMERICAN LEGEND" by Norm Flayderman. Each pistol has a wedge fastened, round, .38 caliber, rifled barrel with under-rib and flat top. The barrels have a dove-tail mounted, nickel-silver front sight. A fixed rear sight is mounted on the barrel tang. The barrels are browned and have three inlaid gold bands at the breech. The top flat of each barrel is engraved "PHILADELPHIA". The pistols have flush-fitted lock plates with fenced bolsters. The lock plates, sides of the hammers and barrel tangs are decorated with a superbly executed vine style engraving on a stippled background (a cased pair of Krider pocket pistols with similar engraving are illustrated on page 35 of "THE COLT ENGRAVING BOOK VOLUME I" by R. L. Wilson. "JOHN KRIDER" is engraved on a ribbon in the center of each lock plate. The lock plates, hammers and tangs have a color-casehardened finish. The pistols have silver forearm tips, trigger guards, buttcaps and concealed cap boxes. The silver mounted fittings are profusely engraved in the same vine style has the lock plate, hammer and tang. The stocks are fancy grade, highly figured, walnut with finely checkered panels on the grip. The back of each grip has a concealed cap box with spring loaded lid. The oval wedge escutcheons are gold and have fine vine engraving on the borders. Each pistol has an ebony ramrod with engraved silver tip.
