Documented Historic Wyoming Territory Shipped Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Rifle with Factory Letter
This is a solid example of a Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1875 by the Sharps Rifle Company. The top barrel flat is marked with the faint one line address ahead of the rear sight and "CALIBRE 40" at the breech. The left side of the frame is marked "SHARPS RIFLE CO / PAT APR 6 1869" and the matching serial number appears on the upper tang, bottom barrel flat under the forearm and on the inside of the forearm. The bottom of the barrel near the breech is also marked "4". The barrel is equipped with a dovetailed blade front sight and a folding leaf rear sight without graduations and with the base marked with the three line Lawrence patent information. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with pewter forend cap and straight grip stock with an iron buttplate, which is number 155143, eight digits away from gun and quite possibly from the same shipment. The accompanying Sharps Rifle Company letter verifies the serial number as being a 40 caliber (shell length not listed), 1874 Sporting rifle with a 30" octagon barrel, single trigger, open sights, oil finished stocks and that it was invoiced at the Hartford factory on October 27, 1875 to W.H. Cadwell & Brown at Fort Steele, Wyoming Territory. Interestingly, Sharps shipped a number of guns to J.W. Hugus, the Post Trader at Fort Steele, but this was the only order shipped to Cadwell & Brown. Fort Fred Steele was established on June 20, 1868 and occupied until August 7, 1886 by soldiers who were sent by the U.S. Government to guard against attack from indians during the construction of the Trans Continental Union Pacific Railroad across southern Wyoming 1867-1869. The construction in turn brought the cattlemen, sheep herders, loggers, tie hacks, miners and merchants who changed the wasteland into Wyoming Territory. Historic ruins still remain at the site.
BBL: 30 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 40
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 155135
Condition: Fine. The barrel retains 70% of the faded original finish with high edge wear, a couple of small areas that have been cleaned during period of usage and scattered minor spotting. The caehardened receiver has silvered out very attractively. The remaining surfaces have a dark mottled gray patina with some scattered minor spotting and some very minor pitting on the lever and lock. The wood is very good with a few moderate chips on the upper right side of the forearm and overall scattered minor dings, dents and scratches associated with a gun that probably saw its share of Wild West action. The markings are crisp. The action is excellent. If you desire to own one impeccably documented Sharps rifle, here it is!
