Diane Ladd Uniform from Alice
This pink waitress uniform was worn by the character “Belle Dupree,” portrayed by actress Diane Ladd, in the hit television series, “Alice.” The Mel’s Diner uniform with polka dot trim has "Belle" embroidered in white thread inside the back collar and a "WBTV" stamp inside the front placket. The garment is the same type worn by Alice (Linda Lavin), Vera (Beth Howland), and the wisecracking Flo (Polly Holliday), who Ladd replaced on the series. Ms. Ladd wore this garment in multiple episodes during Season 4 and 5 (1980-1981) of the series. The sitcom, which ran from 1976-1985, followed the hilarious misadventures of a recently widowed mother (Lavin) from New Jersey that winds up working in a greasy spoon café somewhere in the middle of Phoenix, AZ. The series was nominated for eight Emmy Awards and 16 Golden Globe Awards, including a Golden Globe win by Ms. Ladd for “Best Supporting Actress” in 1981. The hit television series was (very) loosely based on the 1974 motion picture, “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” which featured Ms. Ladd in the role of Flo. She was nominated for both an Academy Award and Golden Globe for her supporting role. This signature piece from the classic television show is in very good screen worn condition and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the costume house.
