Desirable early heavy barrel Sharps Model 1874 single shot rifle, .44 cal., 30” octagon barrel, blue and case hardened finish, wood stocks, #C52859. This gun is in overall good condition showing classic frontier wear withscattered areas of erosion mixed with a heavy brown patina on the barrel and what appears to be some blood pitting on the right barrel flat at the breech (barrel is numbered 156094 and matching in condition and patina to therest of the gun); traces of original case colors on the receiver and lockplate with dark bore, crisp action and single trigger; wood stocks are overall very good with some old scattered mars and scratches from carryand storage and sling swivel base at bottom of butt stock. Factory letter accompanies this gun and states the receiver number indicates invoicing from the Sharps Hartford factory on April 14, 1873 to J.F. Schmelzer,gun and sporting goods dealer of Leavenworth, Kansas with notation that these early military-style Sharps were commonly used on the Buffalo Range as a cheaper version of the Octagon Sporting Rifle.
