This model represents Colt's only attempt to compete with Winchester for the lever action rifle market. Approximately 2,500 carbines were made between 1883 and 1885. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two-line address/patent dates, the left side of the receiver is marked with the Rampant Colt, the top of the lever loop is marked "BURGESS'S PATENTS" flanked by Maltese crosses and the serial number is marked on the lower tang directly behind the trigger. Block base front blade sight and folding ladder carbine rear sight graduated to 900 yards. Saddle staple mounted on the left rear of the receiver, (ring absent), full tubular magazine, blue finished with casehardened hammer and lever, and mounted with a smooth forearm secured with a single barrel band and straight grip stock with a steel crescent buttplate with compartment with 4 piece cleaning rod.
