Desirable U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle

Manufactured between 1873 and 1877 during the height of the Indian War and the Custer Massacre, this is a very desirable example of an original U.S. Model 1873 rifle. Blade front sight/bayonet lug and tangent rear sight graduated to 1,200, marked "V/P/eagle head" on the left side at the breech. Marked "MODEL/1873/(eagle and arrows)/U.S." on top of the high arch breechblock. The lock plate has the eagle and shield motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873" in front of the correct two click tumbler hammer. Mounted with a smooth straight, correct long grip wrist stock marked with a crisp "ESA" inspector's cartouche on the left side and the circled script "P" rear of the lower tang and "RDH" marked next to it. Sling swivels, correct iron cleaning rod with serrated slotted head and "US" marked steel buttplate tang. The left heel of the buttstock has been lightly scratched with the name "Baties".

Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 50% original blue finish mixed with a smooth plum patina. The breechblock retains 70% original case colors. The hammer retains most of the original blue finish and the lock has a smooth mottled gray patina with flashes of original blue finish. The stock is also very fine with a couple small gouges on the forearm and overall some minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. The action is very good. An exceptional original U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor rifle.
