These carbines were used throughout the Spanish American War and during the early 1900s until the development of the 1903 Springfield rifle. The side of the receiver is marked "U.S./MODEL 1896, SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" next to serial number. It has the original carbine length stock that is fitted with the original carbine saddle ring and sling bar on the left hand side. It has the original short forearm and early style handguard with the barrel band that protects the rear sight. It is fitted with the correct Model 1896 carbine rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards, that is marked with the letter "C" on the upper right hand corner of the leaf, designating it as a carbine sight. There are two boxed cartouches on the left side of the wrist (dates unreadable) and there are no visible markings in the pistol grip area. It has two pieces of the original three piece cleaning rod and metal oiler in the buttstock.
