Desirable Model 1841 percussion “Mississippi” rifle by Palmetto Armory of Columbia, South Carolina dated 1852 in .54 caliber percussion long considered secondary Confederate by knowledgeable collectors (Refer Flayderman 9A – 289). The lockis well marked showing Palmetto tree with good lettering and the left breech end of the barrel shows “Wm. Glaze and Company”. The barrel shows strong traces of original brown with some heavy pitting around the breech and firing areas alsonear the muzzle from battle action. The lock shows traces of original colors going to light brown with some slight beginning pitting. The stock shows some minor wood replacement and light refinishing with some mars and small losses alongthe ramrod channel. There is the number “47” stamped on the patch box upside down and the butt plate is also stamped “S.C.” with the same number 47. An old brass tipped ramrod is included of the correct type. The lock works well. 1 of onlyapproximate 1000 made and 500 were destroyed by The Union Forces at the Citadel College in Columbia, South Carolina in February 1865 by General Sherman’s forces.
