Desirable Late 19th Century Single W Winchester Repeating Arms Co Promotional Cartridge Board

Estimate: $18000 - 25000
Winchester cartridge board, circa 1885, measuring 38 inches x 51inches. The board consists of 101 centerfire cartridges mounted in the shape of a "W". On the outer edges of the "W" are small displays of percussion caps, shotgun shells and rimfire cartridges. Between the legs of the "W" are examples of bullets, primers and blanks. The board itself is decorated with the legend "WINCHESTER/REPEATING ARMS CO." in red and gold. Beneath this logo and between the arms of the "W" are two 8 1/2 inch circular paintings; one depicts a hunter and guide stalking game in the North Woods, the other shows a cowboy armed with a Winchester Model 1873 firing from behind his fallen pony. In the apex of the "W" is a painting of a brace of ducks. The bottom of the cartridge board is painted. "NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A" flanked on the left by a panel listing "METALLIC AMMUNITION/PAPER AND BRASS SHELLS/FELT GUN WADS./PRIMERS ETC" and on the right by a similar panel "WINCHESTER REPEATING/RIFLES AND SHOTGUN, /AND SINGLE SHOT RIFLES." The rear of the board retains the original rectangular paper label from Winchester stating this board was presented with their compliments.

Condition: Extremely fine overall. There are a couple of minor cracks on the upper left hand corner of the inner, gold framing, as well as some mottling. The outer wooden frame has had a light coat of varnish applied some time ago and shows only a few minor dings and a minor splintered crack on the lower right hand corner. A magnificent piece of 19th century Winchester memorabilia. The rear label is mostly intact with exception of the portion covering the wire (see photo).
