Desirable Black Powder Colt Single Action Army Frontier Six Shooter Revolver with Acid Etched Panel

This Colt Single Action Army revolver was manufactured in 1881. The highly desirable "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" is acid-etched in an elongated oval panel on the left side of the barrel. The revolver has the Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame, hammer and loading gate have a color casehardened finish. The one-piece walnut grip has a high polish varnish finish. The revolver has the later oval ejector rod head. The hammer spur has knurled bordered checkering. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Style IV address "COLT'S P.T. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in one line. The caliber designation "44" is stamped on the underside of the barrel. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt three line, three patent dates. The caliber designation "44 CF" is stamped on the left front trigger guard bow. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "4041". An "H" inspection mark is stamped in the hammer well. The full serial number "64203" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "203" is stamped on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match.

Fine. The revolver retains 40% of the original blue finish overall. Most of the original blue finish is present on the top and right side of the barrel, top of the ejector housing, cylinder flutes and protected areas of the trigger guard and backstrap. The balance of these components and the case colors on the frame and loading gate have faded to a mottled silver gray patina. The grip is fine overall and retains 40% of the varnish finish with scattered handling marks. The sides of the hammer have most of the original case colors. The barrel retains 80% of the delicate acid-etched "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" marking. The markings and serial numbers on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and other components are clear. The action is crisp and functions fine. This is a fine example of a scarce and desirable early production Colt Single Action revolver with acid etched Colt "Frontier Six Shooter" barrel panel.
