This Winchester Model 1873 rifle was manufactured in 1879. The rifle has the Second Model dust cover guide that is secured to the receiver by screws and a dust cover with 5/8 inch, impressed oval, fine-checkered, thumbhold. The rifle has a color casehardened receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate. The full-octagon barrel and magazine have a blue finish. The stock and forearm are highly figured, 'fancy grade' walnut with fine 'Style H' checkered panels. The barrel has a dovetail mounted, folding, Beach globe and post combination front sight and a sporting style rear sight. A Lyman "Combination Tang Peep Sight" marked "LYMAN/MIDDLEFIELD/ CONN.U.S.A." is mounted on the receiver tang. The iron, casehardened, crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trap. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEWHAVEN, CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "31526" is located on the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. The bottom of the battered cartridge elevator is not marked. No factory letter is available to writer at time of description.

Condition: Very good. The rifle retains 50% of the original blue finish on the barrel and magazine. The surfaces of the barrel and magazine are smooth and the barrel legend is sharp. The color casehardened finish on the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate has faded to a mottled, gray-brown, patina. There is moderate to deep pitting present on the bottom of the forward receiver and sides of the lever. The sideplates, sides and top of the receiver and dust cover are smooth. The loading gate retains 30% of the original niter blue finish. The tang sight retains substantial amounts of blue finish. The buttplate has a deep brown patina. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm are both in very good overall condition with an overcoat of varnish present. The fine checkering on the forearm and stock wrist is sharp and most of the varnish finish remains intact. Wear is limited to a few light scratches on the stock and forearm. This is a very good example of a Deluxe Winchester Second Model 1873 Rifle with very desirable casehardened receiver.
