This item is an exceptional, and very early piece of Montana history, it is a 1890-1910 Deer Lodge Prison crafted, hitched horse hair belt, with a decorative silver colored buckle. The belt shows a "hitched" construction, which is a much more tedious craft than traditional braiding. The belt primarily shows a khaki base color, with a repeating diamond motif in the center, and symmetrical geometric designs on each side. The belt is finished off with a strap of dark brown leather. The belt shows good condition, especially for the age. It still displays vibrant color, and a well functioning buckle. The buckle is marked on the inside with a patent date, reading "PAT. APRIL 1912". The belt measures 37" long, and 1 1/8" wide.
