David F. Clark Inspected Colt Cavalry Model Single Action Revolver
Colt Cavalry Single Action revolver manufactured in 1881 and inspected by the Principal Ordnance Sub-Inspector David F. Clark (D.F.C.). The revolver has the early, 'bull's-eye' ejector rod head, cavalry hammer with elongated, bordered cross-hatching on the spur and one-piece walnut grip. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Fourth Style, 'Elongated Block', Hartford address. The bottom of the barrel is stamped with the partial serial number, "2724", a "P" proofmark (nearly all of the original blue is present under the ejector rod housing), and the "D.F.C." sub-inspector's mark. A small "G" is stamped on the barrel just below the ejector housing lug. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt 'three-date/three-line' patent markings followed by the "U.S." property mark. A small "H" Colt inspection mark is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole. The loading gate is marked with the assembly number "2558". The cylinder side of the cylinder is stamped with a "P" proofmark, "D.F.C." and the partial serial number "2724". The full serial number, "62724" is located on the bottom of the frame. "D.F.C." is stamped above the serial number. "62724" is stamped on the trigger guard and backstrap. All of the serial numbers match. Traces of the date and ordnance inspector's initials are visible on the left side of the grip heel. Any marking on the right side of the grip heel has been obliterated by scratches in the grip.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 45 Colt
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 62724
Condition: Good. The revolver shows moderate wear and has a silver-gray patina. The original blue finish remains on the portion of the barrel covered by the ejector housing. There is scattered light pitting on the frame and on the cylinder. The grip is in fair condition with heavy wear. There is a small chip missing from the lower front corner of the grip, an old but deep gouge in the right side of the grip at the heel and several old scratches and deep dents on the left side of the grip at the heel and butt. All of the markings are clear and legible. The revolver is completely original. The action functions well. This is a solid example of an original Indian War Era Colt Cavalry Model Single Action revolver.
