Azerbaijan is located on the western shores of the Caspian Sea with Iran to the south, Russia to the north and Georgia and Armenia to the west. We recommend all clients fly on Turkish airlines to Baku, Azerbaijan (GYD) connecting via Istanbul. Clients should expect one night in a hotel in Baku before and after their hunt. Sightseeing in the city at the end of the hunt is available for a reasonable $80 per person. A letter of Invitation is required prior to travel at a cost of $100 per person to be paid in advance along with deposit. If applicable a VISA may be purchased in advance or upon arrival at the airport. A representative will meet clients upon arrival and will help those clear customs.

What to Expect: Dagestan Tur hunting in Azerbaijan is a journey into the Caucus Mountains and a test of physical and mental fitness. The Eastern Caucasian Tur, also referred to as the Dagestan Tur, is very plentiful and the trophy quality is very good. Historical success rate are 95% with an average horn length of 29” to 35” and occasional trophies up to and exceeding 40”. Wounded animals are considered harvested and are to be paid in full, therefore it is very important clients travel with firearms they are familiar with and confident shooting. A second tur may be harvested for a trophy fee of $2,900. Although rare, additional species including Caucasian chamois may be added for $3,500, roe deer for $2,000 and bear for $6,000 (excluding CITES for bear).

Rifle & Shot Distances: Flat-shooting rifle calibers from .270 WSM to .300 are recommended. Shot distances average 200 to 350 yards however longer distances may be required as will shooting up and down steep angles. Rangefinders that calculate angle compensation are highly recommended. Rifle import permits are included in the hunt cost and will be provided by the outfitter.

Hunting Season: The hunting season runs from the first of June into October of each year with the primary months of June through September. June through August are among the best months for good weather and safe hunting conditions. Snow, fog and ice in September and October can create hazardous hunting conditions although the hair quality on the tur is somewhat longer and may be more desirable to some

Physical Requirements: Hunters traveling to Azerbaijan should expect altitudes of 8,000 to 10,000 feet and extremely steep and rugged terrain. Although horses are available at some of the camps extensive hiking and climbing should be expected. Although success rates are very high hunters should arrive in “sheep shape” to maximize their opportunity and experience when hunting here.

Hunting Camp: Hunters should expect to spend the first and last night in Baku at a hotel before transferring to camp the following day. One overnight on the way to camp at a hunting house is common and tented fly camps are often used while hunting. Depending on the location of camp and the number of hunters per group it may be required for clients to take their own backpacking tent and sleeping bag. The use of horses is available only in select areas. A maximum of six hunters in a group may share a camp at one time.
Schedule: Clients should expect a nine day travel schedule and five full hunting days. Most itineraries will have clients arriving on day one into Baku and transferring to camp on day two. Day three through seven will be spent hunting and clients should expect to transfer back to Baku on day eight and depart Baku on day nine. Dagestan Tur hunts include five full days of hunting with a minimum of two (2) guides per hunter.

Trophy Prep & Shipping: All trophy capes will be fleshed, salted and dried and skulls and horns will be boiled and cleaned before the conclusion of the trip so clients can take their trophies home with them when they depart as checked luggage. All necessary hunting papers and veterinary certificates will be provided before departure. Clients may experience extra luggage or over weight baggage fees when doing so. Currently no CITES permits are required for the export or import of tur from Azerbaijan.
