Manufactured from 1896 to 1916. "J. STEVENS A. & T. Co./CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A." marked upside down on the right rear flat and "22. L.R." on the left rear on the replacement heavy barrel which has been refiled & rechambered to a 25 cal. (possible a 25-20SS). The barrel is numbered "11256" just ahead of the forearm and is equipped with a globe front sight, has two scope mount bases on the top flat, no cutouts/seats for a rear sight and has a mid range tang mounted vernier peep sight. The serial number is marked on the lower tang. Standard scroll engraved Model 44 1/2 receiver with a full loop type lever and double set triggers. The barrel and hammer are blue with the remaining surfaces casehardened. Mounted with nicely figured, high grade checkered American walnut Schnabel forearm with a Pope style walnut palm rest (blue shaft and nickel mounting base) and a replacement Schuetzen style buttstock with high comb, cheekpiece, perch belly and a nickel plated Swiss style iron buttplate.

Condition: Excellent. The barrel retains 98% blue finish with a couple of tool marks on the breech end a couple of small areas of minor spotting and overall light handling marks. Most of the original case colors remain on the receiver with areas of smooth silver gray patina. The lever retains original case colors in protected areas with the balance having a smooth silver gray patina. The buttplate retains 99% plus nickel finish. The forearm is a little loose, otherwise the wood is very good with scattered minor dents, scratches and very crisp checkering. The markings and engraving are sharp. The action is fine.
