Custom Modified Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Lever Action Carbine with Factory Letter
This is a period modified example of a Winchester Model 1886. Factory letter confirms carbine configuration, 40-65 caliber, (rifle is now a 45-70 smooth bore!), that it was received in the warehouse on February 23, 1895 and shipped with 22 other arms on March 1, 1895. No mention was made of the takedown feature. The rifle features a folding globe front sight and adjustable rear buckhorn sight, takedown action with half magazine, saddle ring and stud mounted on the left side of the receiver and mounted with a smooth forearm with iron end cap and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. The top of the barrel is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight and "45-70" at the breech. The serial number and two patent dates are marked on the lower tang, and "--MODEL 1886--" on the upper tang. The receiver, hammer and lever were casehardened and the remaining parts blue.
BBL: 24 inch round

Condition: Very good as period modified to takedown. The barrel retains 25% original finish, mainly in the protected area around the rear sight, mixed with smooth brownish gray patina. The magazine retains most of the original blue finish with some minor wear from normal usage. The takedown ring has a smooth brown patina. The receiver shows some silvering out with the balance having a dark patina with a small amount of light pitting. The hammer, lever and buttplate have a dark patina with some minor pitting on the heel. The wood is very good with a few very small gouges on the stock and overall some minor dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is very good.
