Manufactured in 1888, this rifle was originally chambered in the 38-56 W.C.F. cartridge. The rifle has undergone a complete Doug Turnball restoration and is now configured as half-round, half-octagon sporting rifle in the very desirable 45-70 caliber with a fully engraved, casehardened receiver and carved wooden stock. The receiver is fully covered with beautiful American style scroll engraving with the left side engraved in an early Winchester style hunting scene that depicts a hunter firing over a downed tree at a charging grizzly bear. The right side has an oval panel with a cowboy on a bucking horse ahead of the loading gate and a bear feeding on a downed Elk on the upper left rear. The underside shows a large Grizzly bear head in an oval. The barrel is equipped with a hooded ramp front sight, there are no provisions for a rear sight and there is a receiver mounted adjustable Lyman rear peep sight. The upper receiver tang has the early style, one-line, factory marking "- MODEL 1886-", with the two-line, patent marking: "-PAT.OCT.14.1884./JAN.20.1885.-" behind the trigger with serial number located on the end of the lower tang. The rifle is mounted with an exhibition AAA deluxe or select grade flame pattern burl walnut forearm and straight grip stock. The forearm and stock wrist are beautifully hand carved floral vine pattern with a matte background. The forend cap, sides of the lever and buttplate are engraved with the same scroll pattern and there is a large oval on the buttplate with a cowboy on a galloping horse. The accompanying factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, 38/56 caliber at the time of shipping, 28" 1/2 octagon barrel, 1/2 magazine, plain trigger, shotgun buttplate, that it was received in the warehouse on February 8, 1888 and shipped on order number 4756, February 10, 1888. Complete with a floral tooled brown leather scabbard, with strap.
